Abstract

EFFECTIVENESS OF BUTTERFLY PEA FLOWER EXTRACT (CLITORIA TERNATEA L.) IN LOWERING BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Hyperglycemia, characterized by elevated blood glucose levels beyond normal limits, is a condition requiring rapid and appropriate management, especially for diabetes patients. Butterfly pea flower has emerged as an alternative therapy to help lower blood glucose in diabetes patients. Objective: To review data on the effectiveness of butterfly pea flower extract (Clitoria Ternatea L.), an herbal antidiabetic agent, in lowering blood glucose levels (BGL) among diabetes patients as a complementary therapy. Methods: A literature review was conducted by searching scientific articles across three electronic databases: Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Proquest. Articles selected as literature sources met the inclusion criteria, which included publication within the past five years (January 2019–March 2024) and discussions on the effectiveness of butterfly pea flower as an antidiabetic, published in nationally accredited and internationally reputable journals. Data analysis involved extracting research evidence on the clinical efficacy of butterfly pea flower in reducing blood glucose levels. Results: Eight studies indicated that butterfly pea flower extract significantly reduced blood glucose levels by enhancing insulin production and secretion, leading to decreased blood glucose levels. The trials also showed an increase in serum CAT and SOD levels, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory benefits, and reduced necrotic cells. Discussion: Butterfly pea flower can serve as an alternative antidiabetic therapy, with potential to stimulate insulin production and secretion to lower BGL in diabetes patients and to prevent extensive pancreatic damage; however, current studies are limited to animal trials. Conclusion: Butterfly pea flower extract is effective as an antidiabetic agent in lowering blood glucose levels in diabetes patients. Further research is needed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of butterfly pea flower extract in the diabetic population.
